About Bellevue

Looking for Missouri’s headwaters, Lewis and Clark became some of the earliest explorers of the city now known as Bellevue. In 1822, the Missouri Fur company established one of its post in the town. Bellevue became a focal place of trading with a number of Native American tribes. Early trappers named the city Bellevue (French, meaning “beautiful view”), after being greatly surprised by the city’s views, which overlook the Missouri River. In an ideal location, having access to the Platte Valley on the Missouri River, the city has been a very prominent trading place of furs from the West and manufactured products from the East.
